Breaking Language Barriers: Strengthening Communication Across Our Teams
At ODG, we believe strong communication builds stronger teams, safer jobsites, and greater opportunities for everyone. That’s why we’re proud to offer language learning opportunities to our team members. Whether it’s learning conversational English or Spanish, team members have the opportunity to build confidence, develop new skills, and better connect with coworkers, customers, and leadership.
In 2024, we launched Old Dominion Group University (ODGU) to strengthen communication through language education. The goal was simple but impactful: help our teams better understand one another, communicate with confidence, and reduce language barriers that can affect safety on the jobsite. When employees feel heard and understood, they are better equipped to ask questions, follow instructions, and look out for one another.
Our partnership with Chesterfield County Public Schools plays an important role in the success of the program. Through partnering with their Adult Education department, together we were able to curate a curriculum and schedule that is perfectly tailored to the needs of our team members. ODGU courses go beyond teaching vocabulary and grammar. They foster connection and shared learning experiences that bring teams closer together. In addition to language skills, students are introduced to digital literacy and financial literacy, supporting growth in all areas of life and reinforcing ODG’s commitment to its people.

In construction, communication plays a critical role in every phase of the job, but most importantly, it supports safety. Clear communication helps prevent misunderstandings, strengthens teamwork, and allows employees to look out for one another each day.
