National Suicide Prevention Month: Building on Progress
September is National Suicide Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness, encourage conversations, and remind those who may be struggling that support is available. For the construction industry, this conversation is especially important. At ODG, we understand that safety extends beyond physical hazards. Supporting mental health and well-being is an important part of creating a workplace where employees can thrive both on and off the job.
Construction Suicide Prevention Week
As part of National Suicide Prevention Month, ODG proudly participated in Construction Suicide Prevention Week. Throughout the week, we shared toolbox talks, awareness communications, and resources to help employees recognize warning signs, support one another, and seek help when needed.
The week aligned with this year’s theme, Building on Progress. The theme reminds us to recognize the strides that have been made in mental health awareness while continuing to break down barriers, strengthen support systems, and create a culture where asking for help is seen as a sign of strength, not weakness.
Building a Culture of Support
One of the most powerful tools in suicide prevention is connection. A simple conversation, a check-in with a coworker, or taking the time to listen can make a meaningful difference.
As part of our awareness efforts, ODG employees reflected on what keeps them going and the people, passions, and goals that motivate them each day. These reminders reinforce the importance of looking out for one another and building a culture where everyone feels supported.
Resources, Support, and Continuing Building
At ODG, we are committed to supporting the mental health and well-being of our employees and their families. We encourage anyone who may be struggling to take advantage of available resources and remember that seeking help is a sign of strength.
Safety is at the forefront of everything we do, and we recognize that safety expands beyond PPE and safe working practices. Safety includes caring for our mental health, and the importance of acknowledging challenges, prioritizing mental well-being, and supporting each other.
While September shines a spotlight on suicide prevention, mental health is important every day of the year. By continuing to check in on one another, encouraging open conversations, and building on the progress we’ve made, we can create a stronger, safer, and more supportive workplace for everyone.
